Born and raised on a ranch in Eastern Wyoming, Keith Kaan obtained his degree in Mechanical Engineering, and then pursued a career working for an oil field service company in Houston and Austin, Texas.
Building has always been a passion, so when he retired to the small town of Mason, west of Austin, Keith started restoring historic homes and volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. When asked if he would volunteer to design the homes and supervise the construction, it was on the condition the affiliate would consent to build more energy efficient homes.
The Mason County affiliate is now into their 10th year of the program and has been able to demonstrate one can build high performance homes that are easy to maintain, extremely energy and water efficient, and, most of all, affordable. Three builds have been certified NAHB and Energy Star and the last three are net-Zero with the addition of solar panels.
